Travel & Leisure Magazine named Fort Worth as one of its 50 Best Places to Travel in the World in 2024 – the only city in Texas to make the list.

Other cities that are the best places to travel in 2024 "for the big-city thrills" are

  • Bangkok, Thailand

  • Cleveland, Ohio

  • Istanbul, Turkey

  • Kansas City, Missouri

  • Las Vegas, Nevada

  • Louisville, Kentucky

  • Montreal, Canada

  • Paris, France

Bob Jameson, president and CEO of Visit Fort Worth, said the city drew 11.4 million visitors in 2023, up from 10.9 million in 2022.

All that interest and growth has spurred a rash of recent high-end hotel developments.

According to the U.S. Census, more people moved to Fort Worth in 2022 than any other city in the country.

Yet the city trails other large Texas cities like Dallas or Austin when it comes to available hotel occupancy. It’s a disparity that’s prompted local leaders to act.

It doesn’t look like the growth – or the tourism – is going away anytime soon. According to Visit Fort Worth, the industry brings in more than $3 billion each year

Plus, Travel & Leisure Magazine just named the city as one of its 50 Best Places to Travel in the World in 2024 – the only city in Texas to make the list. All that interest and growth has spurred a rash of recent high-end hotel developments.

But these hotels aren’t just for out-of-towners. Specifically, The Drover in the Stockyards and The Crescent and Bowie House hotels in the Museum District have become local hotspots and high-end destinations for customers near and far.

“Judging by the success of people coming through the doors, not only guests, from out of state or out of town but also the locals, they’ve been craving something like that,” says Gaylord Lamey, General Manager at Bowie House.

Fort Worth was the only Texas city to make Travel + Leisure's prestigious list, and one of just a handful of U.S. cities (including Cleveland and Kansas City, Missouri). It's keeping good company with the likes of international destinations such as Paris, Istanbul, and Bangkok.

Fort Worth's booming tourism industry raked in $3 billion in revenue just in 2022, the report says. From several highly-anticipated hotel openings (including one that's enticed a famed Food Network chef) to fun attractions like cattle drives and stock shows, the authors note, there's plenty to explore across the city.

Fort Worth's museums are another major magnet drawing people to the city, the report says. Tourists can explore the history of aviation at the Fort Worth History of Science and History, or spend some time appreciating beautiful paintings at the Kimbell Art Museum.

Bob Jameson, president and CEO of Visit Fort Worth, said the city drew 11.4 million visitors in 2023, up from 10.9 million in 2022.

Jameson also asked for voters’ support in May to help fund the second phase of the Fort Worth Convention Center expansion. Proposition A would provide funding for the project through a 2% increase in the hotel occupancy tax.

On Feb. 13, the Fort Worth City Council voted to put the 2% hotel occupancy tax on the May 4 ballot. The 2% increase is projected to generate $10 million per year, which would be used to support revenue bonds for the Fort Worth Convention Center renovation.
