Granger and McCaul were expected to chair their respective committees after serving as ranking member on them in the previous Democratic-led Congress. Arrington won the Budget Committee gavel Tuesday, defeating Reps. Lloyd Smucker, R-Pa., and Buddy Carter, R-Ga. And Williams, a car dealer, ran unopposed to chair the Small Business Committee.
“I am humbled by the confidence and trust of my colleagues to lead the effort to rein-in spending, reduce our debt, and restore fiscal responsibility in our nation’s capital as Chairman of the House Budget Committee,” Arrington said in a statement. “With the national debt surpassing $31 trillion and over 120% of our entire economy, I believe confronting our unsustainable debt is the greatest challenge of the 21st century.”
• Legislators receive committee assignments, The Community News, 25 January 2023, Excerpts. Granger chairs Appropriations, Williams chairs Small Business
U.S. Rep. Roger Williams [US House Rep for D25, which includes Willow Park] was selected to chair the House Committee on Small Business. The committee was originally formed in 1941 to advocate for more protections and better government policies for America’s small businesses.
Williams also serves on the Financial Services Committee, which has jurisdiction over issues pertaining to the economy, the banking system, housing, insurance, and securities and exchanges. Additionally, the committee also has jurisdiction over monetary policy, international finance, international monetary organizations, and efforts to combat terrorist financing.
U.S. Rep. Kay Granger, whose district includes northern Parker County, became chair of the Appropriations Committee, which plays a major role in the budgeting process. Granger is also chair of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, and serves on the State and Foreign Operations Subcommittee and the Energy and Water Subcommittee.
• Michael McCaul [R-Austin] Is the Most Powerful Texan in the [US] House, Texas Monthly 19 January 2023 [in.pdf], Excerpts. Texas has gained some clout with the convening of the 118th Congress. With the very narrow Republican majority in the House of Representatives, there are now four Texas Republicans chairing committees: Kay Granger of Fort Worth leads Appropriations, Jodey Arrington of Lubbock heads the Budget Committee, and Roger Williams of Austin chairs the Small Business Committee. And Michael McCaul of Austin is the first Texan in history to chair the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.
McCaul’s role is likely the most consequential, nationally and internationally.
Meanwhile, he has also already initiated a committee investigation into Biden’s withdrawal from Afghanistan which ended America’s longest war but led to the almost immediate collapse of the government and the return to power of the Taliban. And he’s expected to hold hearings on the threat posed to the United States by China, which he has described as “the greatest national and economic security challenges of this generation.”
