Excerpts
Texas’ newly elected members of Congress vary across the ideological spectrum, ranging from impassioned conservatives to some of the state’s most progressive.
In total, Texas’ delegation is made up of 38 members. The new members include five Republicans and two Democrats. For the next few days, the new members will be in Washington to learn the ins and outs of legislating.
Here are the seven new Texans in Congress.
U.S. Congressman-elect Nathaniel Moran: Former Smith County Judge Nathaniel Moran will represent Texas’ 1st Congressional District in East Texas. Moran ran on his experience leading the county through the COVID-19 pandemic. He hopes to serve on the House’s Ways and Means Committee.
U.S. Congressman-elect Keith Self: Former Collin County Judge Keith Self, perhaps the cohort’s most conservative, will represent the 3rd Congressional District. Self previously served in the Texas House and Senate from 2010-2019.
U.S. Congressman-elect Morgan Luttrell: Republican Morgan Luttrell, a former Navy SEAL, will represent the 8th Congressional District. He ran on a campaign platform of preventing illegal immigration, abortions and “radical classroom indoctrination.”
U.S. Congresswoman-elect Monica De La Cruz: Monica De La Cruz will serve as the first Republican from the 15th Congressional District in South Texas. She flipped the seat on a platform of border security reform and a hard stance against abortion.
U.S. Congresswoman-elect Jasmine Crockett: Progressive state Rep. Jasmine Crockett will represent the Dallas-based 30th Congressional District. Many of her policy ideas received warm receptions from voters, including expanding Medicaid access, switching to clean energy and guaranteeing access to abortions.
U.S. Congressman-elect Greg Casar: Progressive Greg Casar will represent the 35th Congressional District. A longtime labor organizer, some of his policy goals include raising the federal minimum wage and working to secure permanent residency for DACA recipients.
U.S. Congressman-elect Wesley Hunt: Army veteran Wesley Hunt will represent the new 38th Congressional District. Hunt plans to make energy his top policy priority in Congress, and although he aligns himself with the right-wing House Freedom Caucus he has been noncommittal on whether he would join their ranks.
