Texas House District 60 Rep. Mike Olcott [which includes Willow Park] filed a bill on Monday, March 3, that would mandate specific disciplinary action against students who harass or assault a school district employee.
Olcott’s bill, HB 3657, would impose a mandatory 30-day placement in a disciplinary alternative education program (DAEP) if a student engages in assault or harassment of a school district employee.
By requiring that students who engage in this type of conduct be removed from their classrooms, HB 3657 would deter further misbehavior by demonstrating that their actions have consequences.
“Our children’s education is one of the most important things we as lawmakers are responsible for protecting,” Olcott said. “By extension, it is our duty to ensure the teachers and staff are safe at schools. This bill would ensure that caring and dedicated educators are not pushed out of the profession they love because of the out-of-control behavior of some students, and that well-behaved students continue to get the education they deserve.”
